    Get PDF
The aims of Vocational Colleges (VCs) are to give training and impart necessary skills leading to the production of craftsmen who will be enterprising and self-reliant. Many developing countries face the problem of unemployment among graduates; this may not be far from curricula modules mismatching job requirements. The scenario of low participation of private sector in skills development of graduates exists in Nigeria as a result of which the needs of local industries is not met. The objective of this paper is to compare the curriculum framework, courses/subjects-matter, aims, modes of transaction, and evaluation strategies in VCs in Malaysia and Nigeria. The methodology used in this study involved gathering previous studies on comparative analysis in education through Google Scholar, Science Direct, and JSTOR. Related Procedia were also retrieved from Elsevier. Literatures show that students have to adapt with 21st century knowledge, skills, innovative practice and competence as key points to job creation and wealth generation. The findings of this paper show that the curriculum structures in VCs in Malaysia are more updated than in Nigeria. However, curricula in VCs in Malaysia and Nigeria still need some improvements in entrepreneurship skills. This is necessary for effective transmission of knowledge and skills from school to work environment in the 21st century

The need for instructors who are creative in conducting PVMA automotive teaching process is a key requirement in this study. The world was taken aback with the Covid-19 outbreak and Malaysia recorded its first case back in January 2020. The outbreak forced all educational institutions to be closed immediate, making it hard for instructors to carry out a physical learning session. This posed as a challenge to teachers and creative teaching is seen to be a great solution especially in the PVMA (automotive) field by diversifying teaching techniques in the previous teaching and facilitation (PdPc) to the current situation by adopting blended learning via online and face-to-face interaction. Therefore, a qualitative study was conduction to collect data on creative teaching. Data were obtained through interviews submitted to experts answer the research questions and reached data saturation point by the fifth expert. Interview transcripts were analyzed using NVivo software and the open coding showed the teacher's creativity level is very high in helping students to master their learning especially in the PVMA automotive. There are five constructs found from the interview analysis namely PdPc techniques, teacher personality, knowledge, environment, motivation and thinking skills. That construct is aligned with the six elements of creativity in Stenberg's creative teaching theory namely environment, motivation, knowledge, intelligence, personality and thinking style. Therefore, this study suggests that training and experience can help teachers to develop creativity in PdPc process. The training received by the instructors should cover the latest technology used in the industry to apply the skills and knowledge to students during the teaching and facilitation process

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study is to measure changes of students' perception on their problem solving ability over time by using Rasch Measurement Model. Pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design was conducted to investigate how web-based learning system of design education, known as PROUD, affected students' perceptions on their problem solving ability. Thirty second year students pursuing their bachelor degree in technical and vocational education participated in the study. Respondents utilized PROUD for 14 weeks in the process of learning design. Problem Solving Inventory was used as a research instrument and appeared valid and reliable to measure the changes. A pretest was administered at the beginning of the course and a posttest after the learning completed. Changes in the students' perceptions on their problem solving ability were gauged using the rack and stack analysis. A paired sample t-test was also included in the data analysis. Result of the pretest and posttest were -0.147 ± 1.554 logits and -0.749 ± 0.980 logits, respectively. These findings indicate that the perceptions of the students on their ability to solve problem have increased significantly after using the PROUD (paired sample t-test, p = 0.032). These have proven that the use of PROUD changes the students' perception on their own problem solving ability throughout the learning process of design

Purpose of education and spiritual potential: what is your definition

    Get PDF
Developing and producing a holistic human capital has been a major concern to Malaysian education system. Therefore, the National Education Philosophy has been formed based on a mission to produce a balance and holistic individual in terms of physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual based on firm belief and devotion to God. In contrary, education system nowadays is more focused on intellectual and practical aspects, whereas spiritual dimension has being neglected. Spiritual dimension is taught separately in spiritual subjects and the responsibility to teach is given to the educators in the areas concerned. Needs analysis conducted on technical and engineering educators from three engineering faculty at UTM shows that majority of participants do not really understand the real purpose of education, the meaning of spiritual potential and also how spiritual potential can be developed through Technical and Engineering Education. Therefore, there is a possibility that this potential has been less developed through Engineering Education courses in UTM
